Out of touch? Little Englanders? Europhobes? What silly words have you heard used, to describe UKIP? I bet there’s one word you haven’t heard used by the media at all. But it’s the one more and more people are using about UKIP every single day: right.
Around the world increasing numbers of people admire Nigel Farage. And looking at this collection of his speeches on the Euro, it’s easy to see why. He’s become an icon. An embodiment of the spirit of resistance against an impersonal bureaucratic foe; for people from Copenhagen to Colorado.

The next general election will be fought on economics. But only one party
has been right on the most fundamental economic questions for over a decade.
has been right on the most fundamental economic questions for over a decade.
But personally, I admire Nigel chiefly for his patience. Can you imagine what it’s like? Every single parliament in Europe operates on the established principle that if a democracy is to work properly, there should be checks and balances: the side in power needs to have an opposition. Except in one parliament of course, the European Parliament.
There every MEP, apart from a tiny handful of people, is expected to be a cheerleader for a project dedicated to the twin objectives of their own enrichment, and the removal of power from the people. And in this environment day in day out, Nigel stands up, and is frequently the only voice of opposition. The only voice of sense, of sanity.
Perhaps the way he’s treated in the parliament is only to be expected. After all, everybody from the MEPs to the cleaners depend for their livelihood on the anti-democratic EU continuing. So you would think that Nigel would get an easier ride in the media? No chance!
Countless times he has gone into TV studios to discuss political issues about which UKIP has been the only party not with its fingers in its ears, pretending that the truth wasn’t there: immigration, regulation, votes for prisoners, monetary policy, economics… take your pick.
In such cases UKIP has been the only party grounded in reality (and often the only party really representing the majority view of the UK as gauged in opinion polls), and yet what is invariably the journalist’s first question?
“Nigel Farage, isn’t UKIP out of touch?” I don’t know how he does it!

And yet here we are, with all the Euro predictions of the likes of Clarke, Heseltine, Blair and Ashdown going up in smoke, and do they apologise? Will the political establishment admit on just this one occasion, the enormity of its folly, when it’s so undeniably clear for all to see? Where is their contrition for the chaos we would be in if we had gone down the route they wanted?
They will not admit the truth. But it doesn’t matter, because for whatever reason, 2011 is becoming the year when a whole load of chickens are coming home to roost. And excluding from the debate, the only party to have been right on so many issues, is now the thing looking rather “out of touch”.

You're right! Nigel is a HERO!
ReplyDeleteAn excellent article, Steven.
ReplyDeleteKeep up your enthusiasm - it enthuses us !
Superb film. Farage says it all.
ReplyDeleteRubbish! We do not need less EU control but more.
ReplyDeleteThe bankers caused all this crisis wanting to get rich.
With more robust EU regulation we can make sure this never happens again.
How can UKIP get anywhere when even UKIP members believe we (Britain ) 'need' to stay in Europe to survive.
ReplyDeleteEspecially with the devolvement of scotland and wales. An even smaller voice in a room full of paid bullies.
Do people still believe the banking crisis wasn't 'allowed' or seen years before.
This was a deliberate tactic to bankrupt the country and keep us all working slaves to the EU
I agree entirely with Nigel. I think he is a real hero for the speeches he makes in the environment he makes them. How anyone can suggest that you need more EU control rather than less, I will never know. The EU is the biggest problem in Europe.
